Augustine Sweeney (1909 ~ 1980.1.19.)

Between February 1939 and November 1941, Japanese forces invaded China multiple times, targeting congregations, and committed atrocities. Augustine criticized these actions. He predicted that if the Sino-Japanese War were to prolong, Japan would face defeat due to shortages of resources. He exposed the false reporting of the Japanese military’s situation.

In February 1941, to the devotee who visited his place, he prophesied Japan’s defeat due to the prolonged war. In November, he stated that the United States, Britain, and the Soviet Union were preparing to collectively encircle Japan for an attack, and it was evident that the Japanese military would collapse within two years.

Using these ideas to spread counter thoughts, he got arrested by Japanese police in December 1941. In October, he was sentenced to two years in prison by the Gwangju District Court for violating the Army and Navy Discipline Laws. In 1999, the government posthumously awarded him the Order of Merit for National Foundation.
